Southern Utah is 0-2 all-time against Washington State. The teams last faced off in 1997 in a 30-point victory for the Cougars.
Southern Utah
SUU came out on opening day and put up 103 points on 51.5% from the field and 50% from three. The 48-point blowout was SUU’s largest win since the 2021-22 season and their first opening day win since 2022-23.
With a lot of new faces on the team, this game was a great chance for head coach Tracy Mason and the fans to get a glimpse of what this season might look like. Transfer forward Brooklyn Fely led all T-Birds with 21 points and was tied for first with 11 rebounds.
Southern Utah also saw tremendous guard play from Sierra Chambers and Kortney Doman. Chambers scored 14 points and was second on the team with four assists.
Doman, a sophomore from Crane, Oregon, was all over the place for SUU. She tallied her first career double-double, scoring 11 points and grabbing 11 rebounds along with two blocks and two steals.
SUU will look for their first 2-0 start since 2022-23, when they won their conference and appeared in the NCAA Tournament.
Washington State
It has been a slow start for coach Kamie Ethridge and the Washington State women’s basketball team. The Cougars are 0-2 to start the season with losses to the University of Idaho and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.
Despite the losses, Washington State’s Elenora Villa is off to a blazing start to the season. The guard from Lissone, Italy is averaging 21.5 points a game and is shooting 52.9% from the field.
Defensively, it has been a rough two games for the Cougars. They are giving up 75.5 points a game, with foul trouble being one of their big issues. Washington State committed 27 fouls against Idaho and 24 against UNLV.
WSU is looking to avoid their first 0-3 start since 2010-11, when they lost their first five games and finished 8-23 on the season.
