Spook Alley returns to Southern Utah University with underwater horrors

SUU’s United States Institute of Theatre Technology chapter held its annual Spook Alley on Oct. 17-18. The theme was “Thalassaphobia” and participants were taken on an underwater adventure through the tunnels beneath the Auditorium and the Adams Theatre to explore the wreckage of a sunken ship.

For the second year in a row, USITT opened its doors to the Cedar City community to showcase its members’ theater production skills and bring Halloween spirit to town.

“The goal for Spook Alley is to introduce our freshman theater tech majors to the resources available to them, network with professors and put on something amazing,” said Abigail Ingle, one of the event coordinators.

Students and community members alike praised the event’s creativity and atmosphere. Along with the performances and decorations, spooky music played in the background, further adding to the spooky experience.

“This was a really cool event and you can just feel that Halloween is around the corner,” said Austin Roberts, an SUU junior. “It’s a really fun event.”

Spook Alley’s ghost pirates

Visitors were surprised by several scare actors throughout the event. At the start of the adventure, ghost pirates warned attendees of the dangers that lay ahead on their path and further down, other actors, hidden in corners, provided memorable scares.

Admission for the event was $5, with proceeds supporting USITT’s future projects. Alongside the haunted experience, a costume sale was also held.

With Halloween inching closer, Cedar City and SUU are gearing up for more spooky events. SUU will host its annual Scream on Oct. 25 at the Sharwan Smith Student Center and local haunted houses and corn mazes are preparing to thrill visitors.

Both the community and student body will have plenty of options for Halloween fun this season. For more information, check the events calendar and @suustudentlife on Instagram.
