Spooky Season has arrived and Utah ranked number five in the nation for the best states to trick-or-treat. It’s the only Western state in the top 10 and its large youth population helps bring out the Halloween spirit.
On Oct. 31, families across the United States will take to neighborhoods to keep the tradition alive. Happening since the 1920s, trick-or-treating brings children and adults together, filling sidewalks with laughter, costumes and plenty of candy. While fun is a priority, safety remains a central concern and this can vary depending on the state.
For this reason, KURU Footwear compiled a ranking of the 50 best states for walking the street this time. It’s based on five data points, including walkability, pedestrian fatalities per 100,000 people, the percentage of children in each state, the weather and Google search trends data.
With 26.6% of residents under 18, Utah holds the highest share of children among the top 10 states. It boasts a Walk Score of 59, placing it in the “somewhat walkable” category, while average temperatures hover around 49°F.
The Midwest dominates the list, with several states ranking above Utah, including Illinois, Ohio, Wisconsin and Indiana. They have a higher combination of walkable neighborhoods, a big youth population and safe conditions. Behind Utah are Pennsylvania, Iowa, New Hampshire, Michigan and Minnesota.
For college students heading out on Halloween night, be mindful when walking in neighborhoods, travel in groups and watch for children walking along streets, curbs and driveways.
