Governor Cox addressed Utah students after the assassination of Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University on Sept. 15.
“Right now, it may feel like rage is the only language in our politics, but you have the power to choose differently.” Cox went on to encourage students to treat everyone with dignity and respect, talk to people you disagree with and forgive even when it feels impossible.
Cox emphasized the importance of free speech on college campuses, calling it “the free exchange of ideas.” He challenges students to spend less time online and more time in the real world. He urges students to put down their phones, read something uplifting and go outside and laugh with their friends.
Cox said Utahns mourned the death of Kirk peacefully. ”There weren’t riots or destruction, there were vigils, prayers and people coming together, that’s the Utah way,” he continued, “your generation can carry that forward, you can build a culture where we embrace differences without letting hate divide us.”
Gov. Cox pleaded with Utah students to treat everyone with respect and continue to make Utah a peaceful place.
“My prayer is that you will choose humanity, connection and love.”
