Library extends its Friday hours to Midnight

It’s finals time, and Southern Utah University  students know that to mean late nights, copious amounts of caffeine and last-minute studying. To help with that anxiety, the Gerald R. Sherratt Library is extending its Friday hours to be open until Midnight on April 18, instead of its usual 8 p.m. closure.

Late Night in the Library, begins this Friday and operates throughout finals. Its purpose is to give  students more time, space and support while they push through one of the busiest times of the semester.

One of the library staff members said the change was student-driven.

“Finals are overwhelming,” they said. “We wanted to offer students a quiet, safe place to study where they won’t be shooed away. People learn differently — some are night owls, and this lets them get the most out of that.”

Other than the late night, students can expect a cozy, productive environment. There will be free snacks, access to printers and study rooms, and even help from library staff if you need research tips or source guidance.

“We’re not turning it on and letting people loose, by any means,” the employee added. “We’re making an environment where students feel supported. Even just having the knowledge that the library’s open late can make people breathe a little easier.”

This is only one of many efforts across campus to provide student well-being during finals. There will also be extended building hours and activities that promote stress relief.
