Under the direction of Trevor Davis, Southern Utah University’s Jazz Ensemble II performed their spring concert on Thursday, April 10 at 7:30 p.m. in the Student Center Living Room.
There were a variety of tunes from slow groovy melodies to loud strong harmonies. Songs from the performance included “The Kid from Red Bank”, “Boogie Stop Shuffle” and “That Warm Feeling.”
“I love ‘That Warm Feeling,’ it’s just so cozy, so laid back,” said Thomas Mendoza, a freshman baritone saxophone player.

Those that were not able to attend the event were able to enjoy the performance from their homes by live stream. The video can be found on the SUU Music Department’s YouTube channel or the SUTV’s live streaming website.
This is not the first jazz concert in the Living Room, though this one went more smoothly than the first.
“The first one went well but the only issue was the spotty Wi-Fi,” said Mendoza.
Beyond the corrected internet connection, this concert had a song that was written and produced by one of the students. “A Flux of Forouche” was written by Kyson Larsen who also played the keys during the event.
“Maria Schneider’s music is very complex and it’s beautiful and it’s different. She very much writes for a jazz orchestra rather than like a big band. You’re going to hear lots of colors and loud noises too. The title is a little misleading, it’s more like a dance of a monster, the song is not that soft. It’s really fun and the band sounds great, ” said Davis at the end of the concert while commenting on the last piece.
