Current and upcoming construction projects in Cedar City

The Cedar City Council approved multiple construction projects that will take place over the next few years to improve Cedar City’s community and infrastructure. While previously discussed, the council voted for the projects to move forward on March 12, 2025.

Four projects forge ahead as summer approaches. These include Fiddler’s Canyon Park, Cedar City Regional Airport, the Heritage Center and the Coal Creek Emergency Watershed Protection plan.

Fiddler’s Canyon Park
Fiddler’s Canyon Park has been in the works for many years, however the city finally decided on a location for the park last year. The park will reside near Main Street and East Nicholas Canyon Road, and will cost from $3-5 million to build.

The park will span 2.5 acres and include a playground, a parking lot, pavilions, a restroom and a nature park with a pedestrian bridge. The city made a request for architectural design proposals and plans will be drawn up this month. The plans should be finished by late summer, and the construction process will start shortly after.

“We continue to make sure that leisure services and recreation is an important part of our future,” said council member R. Scott Phillips.

Cedar City Regional Airport
The Cedar City airport has been under construction for almost a year, since the Terminal Expansion Project started last May. With an increased budget of almost $4.8 million, the project is close to being finished.

In addition, the airport has applied for a grant to improve the runway and taxiways. It has been roughly 5-6 years since the airport has had asphalt maintenance done, and the airport plans to apply crack sealant, seal coating and restripping. If the grant is approved, the renovations will be complete in summer 2026.

Heritage Center Theater
Jason Clark, manager of the Heritage Theater met with the city council to discuss renovations to the center.

“We need to do some serious consideration of the renovation of the Heritage Theater,” shared Clark.

Clark met with Schuler Shook’s office and they will oversee the project. The main goal for the renovations is to bring the theater up to current industry standards. Renovations are expected to begin in 2028 as issues are addressed and funds are acquired.

Coal Creek Emergency Watershed Protection project
The Coal Creek Emergency Watershed project is sponsored by the National Resources Conservation Services. With plans to add rock and other material to shoreline structures in an attempt to moderate erosion along Coal Creek, the efforts will start at Center Street Bridge and go about 800 feet downstream.

The council received many bids to complete the project, but chose Iron County’s Perco Rock as construction moves forward. The expenses for the project currently total around $2.3 million The total funding for the project is estimated to be $3.6 million.

While the project timelines are lengthy, each project is set to increase the city’s value. More information about these projects can be found on Cedar City’s website. The site provides many resources for residents and the Cedar City council is available to provide insight on these upcoming projects.
