Cedar City’s symphonies band together

The SUU Wind Symphony performed with bands from Canyon View and Cedar High School on March 24 at 7 p.m.

The three groups performed symphonies including “Joyride” by Michael Markowiski and “The Thunderer” by John Philip Sousa.

Cedar High students Andrew Laws and Joseph Nevins both recently auditioned for SUU’s band and are in high spirits knowing they’ll receive results before the week is up.

“If I’m ever playing with any of (the SUU musicians), the level of playing they have always pushes me to play better,” said Nevins.

Performing in a band has brought SUU flutist and violinist, Samantha Hall happiness through teamwork and the feeling of creating beautiful melodies with her peers.

“Everyone’s going to have a different experience and that’s okay, that’s the point but I hope they leave and want to create something or talk to someone they haven’t talked to in a long time, I just want (the audience) to feel moved inside,” expressed Hall.

Wind Symphony conductor Adam Lambert is a firm believer in the power of musical expression, and has seen it change lives time and time again.

“Music gives us a chance to step out of our routine and experience something transcendent that goes beyond regular conversation and interactions. If we really achieve the goal of excellence within our medium then the students experience something euphoric. Students that struggle with mental health and challenges in life, it centers them and brings them into a place where they feel peace,” said Lambert.
