Flippin’ Birds dazzle with 196.900 on senior night

As the season nears an end, the Southern Utah University women’s gymnastics team hosted Boise State University for senior night on Friday, Mar. 7. The Flippin’ Birds put up a season-high 196.900, leading to their win over the Broncos. 

With the win, SUU improves to 12-4 on the year. Boise State falls to 12-5-1 on the season. 

Vault
Southern Utah started the meet strong, putting up a 49.200, led by senior Ellie Cacciola. Cacciola landed a 9.875, followed by Mackenzie Kelly and Niya Randolph with a 9.850.

Despite Alyssa Vulaj landing a 9.875, Boise State fell behind early, scoring a 48.875. 

Bars
SUU continued to soar, led by Maria Ferguson. The sophomore gymnast nailed a 9.900, leading SUU to a 49.250-29.225 win on bars. 

Sydney Leitch finished first for the Broncos with a 9.875. 

Beam
Boise State’s Emily Lopez helped the Broncos gain confidence on the beam, landing a rotation-high 9.900. 

Elliot Bringhurst put up a 9.850 for Southern Utah, but Boise State won the rotation 49.175-49.100.

Floor
Finishing on the floor, Southern Utah went out in dominating fashion. Randolph performed an impressive 9.925, followed by Cacciola with a 9.900. 

Valuj led the Broncos with a 9.850, but it wasn’t enough as SUU finished with 49.350-49.025 on the floor. 

Randolph finished first in the all-around with a 39.450, helping SUU earn the 196.900-196.300 win. 

What’s next?
Southern Utah will face Boise State again on Friday, Mar. 14, at 7 p.m. in Boise, Idaho. This will be the final meet for Southern Utah in the regular season.
