SUMA Sidekicks assembled this past Tuesday, March 4 to create sun catchers to enjoy as the sun starts to rise earlier and set later. Individual bags filled with charms and supplies were set out for participants along with various drinks and snacks to enjoy.
“Art is very important, especially for the youth. Kids (have) a lot going on in their brains and sometimes they don’t know how to get it out — scribbling on a piece of paper is the only way,” said attendee Jordan Esplin.
Esplin and her friends attended the meeting yesterday to catch a break from their studies and come together in an artistic community.
As the three used pliers to pull apart and push together jump rings to string together different beads and charms in light-catching patterns, they enjoyed each other’s conversation and met new friends. Although their patience was tested, they were happy with the final products.

“It’s a community, it’s comforting and it’s a great place to meet people,” said attendee Guinevere Moodie.
SUMA Sidekicks offers activities for everyone at all skill levels, and the program is free for Southern Utah University students. As sidekicks continue to attend monthly meetings and visit the art museum, they earn prizes such as posters, coloring books and disposable cameras.
“The only way to get things out of your head is to create something,” said Moodie.
Art is one of the most valuable outlets and it allows people to be expressive in a way nothing else does.
The next event will be held April 18 where participants will paint and plant flower pots.
