SUMA Sidekicks crafts magnetic love for Valentine’s Day

To celebrate Valentine’s Day, the Southern Utah Museum of Art hosted a clay magnet activity for their SUMA Sidekicks event on Tuesday, Feb. 11. Students were invited to come and enjoy a moment of togetherness while trying out a craft project.

Upon arrival, kits containing clay, magnets and instructions were provided. To perfect the details of their works, molding clay tools and paint were also available. From these, participants were able to make a minimum of 6 magnets. Between lively conversations, students shared their inspiration.

“It was fun being able to see everyone use their creativity to come up with something to make and paint,” said event attendee Taylor Hilton. “It was also cool getting to see people get to know each other. No one was afraid to go up to each other.”

Designed as a way to gather students and showcase the museum, SUMA Sidekicks is a free membership program that organizes events every second Tuesday of the month from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Membership includes prizes, exclusive events and a 20% discount at the SUMA boutique.

While Valentine’s Day was the overarching theme, a wide range of creations emerged from participants’ minds. Students didn’t hesitate to get their hands dirty to bring their ideas to life and explored a variety of subjects including dinosaurs, cherries, stars or even worms.

“I just did everything that I liked
and brought back nostalgia,” said attendee Valerie Frias. “(My favorite thing was) spending time with my friends and being creative together.”

Through creative activities, students have the opportunity to meet new people and enjoy a moment away from the stress of classes, while completing their punch card to receive rewards.

“Sidekicks is super awesome because I think that anyone at any level of artistic ability can come. Even if you think you can’t make something, you’ve never done art before, we have a lot of stuff that is really open to new people,” said SUMA’s K-12 Learning Assistant Kalia Thompson. “Come over and just try, you will end up with a cool art piece to take home.”
