Southern Utah University’s Parent and Family Services is hosting its annual Valentine’s Day event on Tuesday, Feb. 11, where students can come to the Sharwan Smith Student Center Living Room and celebrate the holiday by writing a love note to their family.
From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., students are invited to take pictures in a Polaroid photo booth, eat Valentine’s treats and write cards for their families.
Although Parent and Family Services Coordinator Jenny Taylor was not the first to host this event, she noticed how much the students and parents appreciated it and decided to continue the tradition every February.
“I think many students want to connect with family over holidays, even if they’re just fun, kind of random holidays. This event makes it easy for students to swing by The Living Room, take Polaroid photos and make a card, and Parent and Family Services take care of the rest,” she said. “The parents are thrilled to receive mail from their students. It’s a good thing for everyone.”
Taylor held a similar event in November entitled Attitude and Gratitude where students wrote a note of gratitude to family members.
Love Notes to Family allows students to feel included in the love-holiday, where they may otherwise feel left out if they don’t have a significant other. Parent and Family Services wants to push that Valentine’s is not just for romance, but to celebrate the love around you.
The event aims to build a stronger connection between students, their families and SUU.
“It’s great to be a liaison for connection. We care about students, and by extension, we care about their families. I believe that even relatively small things like this event can foster support for everyone,” said Jenny.
