After spending the first month on the road, the Southern Utah University women’s gymnastics team is hosting Sacramento State University on Friday, Feb. 7, at 6:30 p.m. in the America First Event Center.
Southern Utah
The Flippin’ Birds have started the 2025 campaign strong. SUU is 7-3 on the year and is ranked No. 28 in the nation with a team average of 195.300. In their last match, Southern Utah thrived at the Brigham Young University Tri-Meet, scoring a 195.875.
Southern Utah saw three different gymnasts receive MPSF weekly awards after their dominant performance on Jan. 31. Taylor Gull earned Specialist of the Week after laying down a 9.900 on the floor routine.
Mia Hampton was awarded Freshman of the Week after recording a 9.775 on vault and a 9.900 on the floor. Brinlee Christensen was named Gymnast of the Week with her stellar performance, securing first place in the all-around.
Niya Randolph has also shined in her sophomore season here with the Thunderbirds. Randolph finished third in the all-around at the BYU Tri-Meet and finished first in the all-around on Jan. 10.
Sacramento State
The Hornets started the season strong but have struggled in their last two meets. After starting 5-0 on the year, Sacramento State is just 1-4. Overall, the Hornets are ranked No. 47 in the nation with an average of 194.205.
Sacramento State saw their best match come at the beginning of the season when they finished with a 194.700 against the University of California, Davis. Rylin Zimmerman took the top spot in the balance beam with a 9.8500 and Hannah Stizman with a 9.850 on the uneven bars.
Although the Hornets started the season strong, Sacramento State finished last at the Boise State University Tri-Meet, scoring 194.600. Freshman Kaitlyn Driessen finished first on the beam with a 9.850.
In last year’s meets, Southern Utah went 3-0 against Sacramento State with their closest meet coming in the MPSF Conference Championship meet where SUU came out on top 196.625-196.125.
