Two-year-old black Labrador Retriever, Thunder, is the newest member of the Southern Utah University Police force. Obtained through a Law Enforcement Agency Task Force grant, this dog can be found alongside Officer Marshal Gunter.

In collaboration with other higher education institutions, SUU is dedicated to providing a secure environment for all, and Thunder’s recruitment is no exception. With training in firearm and explosive detection, Thunder serves with the intent to provide better security at SUU events.
The SUU Police department’s mission is to “ensure a safe and secure environment” for members of the academic community. This added security will allow students to focus on their studies and provide community members with an added level of comfort.
“Chief Medina and Officer Gunter have worked hard to bring this resource to SUU. The chief and his department are doing great work to maintain SUUPD’s mission and commitment to campus safety,” shared Vice President of Operations, Tiger Funk. “Thunder comes to us from one of the top service dog providers in the country. His skills will be invaluable to our campus and community.”
Born in Canada and raised by Next Level K9 in Moapa, NV, Thunder is currently serving in Cedar City. With plans to continue K-9 training and help Thunder become a tracking dog, the campus has opened their arms for this furry friend.
“We welcome Thunder to the SUU family,” stated Funk.
