Parking concerns discussed at SUU Town Hall

Construction taking up a portion of the parking lot

The Southern Utah University Student Association or SUUSA gathered in the ballroom to talk discuss campus-wide parking issues on Tuesday.

With a new music building under construction and an enrollment increase, parking at SUU has become a concern with students struggling to get to class on time.

“Finding parking at SUU is a daily struggle,” said sophomore Julia Carson. “Sometimes I even have to get to school an hour early to find parking which hinders my work and academic schedule.”

SUU Facilities staff are working hard to solve this issue and a new parking lot was just finished. Lot number 15, located south of Bristlecone Hall has added 154 stalls for student use.

Another parking lot located by the SUU police station will be finished in November. This will add 238 stalls to compensate for the spaces taken up by construction.

“My job and the entire job of the executive council is to make students happy,” said SUUSA Vice President Dante Vega-Lopez.“We hear you and understand the parking concerns going on. Know we are having daily conversations about this and working to serve you the best we can.”

Cedar City provides a public transportation system known as CATS. This is one solution that was brought up in a recent Dean’s Council. Another meeting will take place later this month to further discuss it.
