From Script to Stage in a Day: Second Studio revives Adams Theatre for 24 Hour theatre challenge

Southern Utah University’s student-run theater company, Second Studio, is gearing up for their first event this semester. The highly anticipated 24 Hour Theatre, is set to take place Friday, Sept. 13. through Saturday, Sept. 14. This semesterly tradition gives students a whirlwind experience of creating new theater pieces in just one day. From writing and directing, to memorizing and showcasing—all performances are inspired by prompts from Second Studio’s Showcase directors; Rockwell MacGililvray, Taya Christiansen and Showcase Manager Shay Wilkey.

This year’s challenge is expected to be held at the Adams Memorial Theater, though there have been logistical challenges with the fire marshal approvals.

“We’re 80% sure we’re all good for the Adams,” shares MacGillivray.

MacGillivray is excited about the new location, noting the personal significance of the theater, which once served as the main stage for the Utah Shakespeare Festival before new facilities were built in 2016.

“I have a personal love for the Adams Theater,” said MacGillivray. “Performances haven’t happened there for a while, but remarkably, it looks like 24 Hour Theatre might return to [that] stage.”

For MacGillivray, the best part of this tradition is watching the performances unfold. While he’s never participated directly, he’s been a long-time spectator and looks forward to seeing the creativity that emerges when strangers collaborate under pressure.

“We’re on call 24/7 for writing, directing, or acting advice during the event,” MacGillivray adds. Despite extensive summer preparations, he expects surprises along the way embracing the unpredictable nature of the event with the mantra, “The show must go on!”

Students from all disciplines, not just theater majors, are encouraged to participate, encouraging inclusivity and collaboration within the college community.

The event is an opportunity for students to flex their creative muscles and bond over a shared passion for the arts. It’s an impetus  collaboration where creativity thrives under pressure, resulting in a unique and memorable theater experience. Tickets for the showcase are just $3 and the performance starts at 6pm. The public is encouraged to attend this one-of-a-kind event.
