The Southern Utah University football team will head to Texas to take on the University of Texas at El Paso on Saturday, Sept. 7 at 7 p.m. The matchup can be streamed through ESPN+.
The Quarterback controversy
The Thunderbirds were hoping to find their starting quarterback during week one against the Utah Utes, yet neither of the two stood out in the 49-0 defeat. Junior Jackson Berry started the game for SUU, tallying 54 yards while completing six of 11 attempts. Berry also threw an interception, and added six rushes for 23 yards.
Junior Bronson Barron got snaps at quarterback as well. Barron boasts an impressive resume, the best of which was his third season at Weber State University where he threw for 21 touchdowns and 2,529 yards. His season did not start well, seeing as he only completed one of his seven attempts for nine yards.
Bounce back game for the Miners
UTEP was defeated in their week one matchup by Nebraska, losing 40-7. Newcomer quarterback Skyler Locklear had a solid start to the campaign, totaling 115 yards with 11 completions on 17 attempts. Lockear tallied both an interception and a touchdown.
Austin Peay University transfer Kam Thomas looks to continue his fantastic start to the season after a first week performance of seven catches for 71 yards and a touchdown.
The running game
SUU runningback Targhee Lambson will have a great matchup with UTEP linebacker Dorian Hopkins. Hopkins ranks seventh in all of Division I with 16 total tackles, and is placed first among teams that have played one game.
Lambson carried the ball just six times in the loss to Utah, but gained 44 yards. The Thunderbirds will need more production from their offense if they want to pull off the upset over the Miners.
