Frawgsten’s Frogservations: Overlooked

As a stuffed frog sitting on the desk of the SUU News arts editor, I have seen the epic highs and lows of everyone’s favorite student news organization.

But before I dish on all things SUU News, I must introduce myself. My name is Frawgsten. I am a blue poison dart frog purchased as merch at a concert for the alternative band Waterparks. I’m named after Waterparks’ lead singer, Awsten Knight, hence the unique spelling of my name. My owner is Tessa Cheshire, the super cool and smart arts editor. From my perch on their (my) desk, I see just about everything that happens in the newsroom. Join me as I break down the highlights of the past week.

News channels of the week:

From my desk in the newsroom, I have a premium view of the four big screens that play various news channels: CBS, ABC, Fox and NBC. That is a lot of letters. Starting Tuesday, March 26, all four channels consistently covered the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse in Baltimore, Maryland. It was tragic news, and my heart goes out to all of the affected families. On a positive note, many of the SUU News staff noted how attractive the Baltimore mayor is — shout out to Brandon Scott!

Opp and bestie of the week:

This week, my opp is hands-down Editor-in-Chief Kale Nelson. What did he do, you ask? He had the audacity to bring his Xbox into the newsroom to play video games, and he didn’t even offer me a controller! Everyone knows that I am the ultimate gamer, so to not be included in the fun is perhaps the biggest insult imaginable. If you see Kale around campus, be sure to tell him how disappointed you are in him.

On the flip side, my bestie of the week is Outdoors Editor Lily Brunson. She sits right next to my desk and has been nothing but nice to me. She is so smart and capable, and she keeps the newsroom from going up in flames (which I appreciate, since I live here). It’s also her birthday week, so she was an easy pick.

Gossip of the week:

I have overheard many, many juicy secrets this week. On Wednesday Tessa, who is also the social media manager, confided that the SUU News team has been officially locked out of their TikTok. They settled for Instagram reels this week.

According to my knowledge, reporter Heather Turner has the highest success rate in her March Madness bracket with a 69% accuracy rating as of March 27.

I’ve also heard reporters and editors alike complain about the lack of Dole Whip in the newsroom this semester. Michele Fogg, the news advisor, owns a Dole Whip cart, but she hasn’t brought in a fresh batch since her October pumpkin recipe. I moved in the beginning of March, so I haven’t been able to try this mysterious concoction. Please Michele… more Dole Whip.

Top articles of the week:

There have been a good number of excellent articles published to the SUUNews.net website recently, but it was quite easy to pick my top three.

Students and community members join SUU Outdoors for annual bouldering competition, written by Gentry Wolf. As a frog, I love all things in the outdoors section, even the ones about events that take place inside the P.E. Building. This story definitely inspired me to try bouldering.

Here’s everything you need to know about fall 2024 registration by Nick Stein. This short but sweet article was so informative about registration, and I felt very equipped to register for my classes. Unfortunately, I am a frog, and frogs can’t go to college (which is rude), so I must live vicariously through the employees of SUU News.

TDAA presents ‘Constellations: Tethered Souls’ by Tessa Cheshire. Perhaps I am biased because this story was written by my owner, but this article was a fun read about a fun event. I shed a tear when I thought about the theme for the dance concert.

Frawgsten’s fit of the week:

As a frog, I periodically shed my outer layer of skin, making it difficult to sport any of my fire outfits. This week has been a week of violent shedding, so I have only been wearing my birthday suit. Fortunately, even without any added apparel, my smooth, iridescent skin still makes me the best dressed in the newsroom.

Side quest of the week:

This week, I took on the very important side quest of attending the BFA Art Exhibition at SUMA. I was blown away by the art that was showcased, though I do think they’d all be just a bit better if they featured me. I am obviously the best subject for any art piece — have you seen me? Regardless, I strongly believe that everyone should attend this exhibition, which is open until April 26. I will personally be returning to see if anyone updates their pieces to include me.
