Flippin’ Birds cap off regular season with a third-place finish at the Washington Quad

On Friday, March 15, the Southern Utah University gymnastics team captured third place with a score of 196.525 at the Washington Quad meet. The University of Washington took first place at 197.175, followed by Brigham Young University with a total of 196.750. In fourth was California State University, Sacramento at 195.350. 

Vault
The Cougars led the way in the event, tallying a 49.225.  SUU followed closely behind at 49.200. Washington finished third with a score of 49.150, and the Hornets came up last at 48.800.

BYU was led by freshman Ava Jorgensen, who tallied a 9.900. UW’s Skylar Killough-Wilhelm also chalked up a 9.900. The Hornets’ leader was sophomore Sarah Lutrel at 9.850.  

The Flippin’ Birds got a big performance out of freshman Brinlee Christensen, who won the event with a career-best score of 9.925. Kayla Pardue, Ellie Cacciola and Niya Randolph each added scores of 9.825. 

Bars
The Huskies and the Flippin’ Birds tied for the lead at 49.150. BYU added a 49.000, and Sacramento State tallied a 48.800. 

SUU was led by sophomore Trista Goodman, who chalked up a 9.900. She was followed by Christensen and senior Aubri Schwartze at 9.850. 

Killough-Wilhelm posted an outstanding 9.925 for the Huskies. BYU seniors Anyssa Alvarado and Anna Bramblett each scored a 9.850. Sac State sophomore Kara Houghton had a team-leading score of 9.875. 

Beam
BYU freshman Brynlee Andersen won the event with a brilliant score of 9.925. She was followed by three Husky gymnasts, Killough-Wilhelm, Emily Innes and Lana Navarro, who each put up a 9.900. Lutrel led the Hornets at 9.875. 

The Flippin’ Birds finished last on the beam, tallying a measly 48.900. Alyssa Fernandez and Kennedi McClain each scored a team-leading 9.850. 

The Huskies won the event with a score of 49.450, followed by the Cougars at 49.050 and the Hornets at 49.000. 

Floor
BYU won the floor exercise event with a score of 49.475. The Huskies finished second at 49.425, and SUU was third, chalking up a 49.275. The Hornets came in last at 48.750. 

Washington’s Killough-Wilhelm and BYU’s Kylie Eaquinto tied for first with inspiring scores of 9.975. For the Cougars, senior Sydney Benson added a 9.950, good for third in the event. SUU’s Randolph tallied a 9.925, followed by a 9.875 from Cacciola. 

All-around
Washington’s Killough-Wilhelm dominated the all-around, finishing with a stellar score of 39.700. Randolph came in second at 39.275, and Sacramento States’ Lutrel and Emma Morgenthaler tied for third with scores of 39.100. 

What’s next?
On Saturday, March 23, the Flippin’ Birds will head to Sacramento to compete in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championship. The meet will take place at 4 p.m. MDT and can be streamed through Overnght.
