Flippin’ Birds beat Hornets, fall to Broncos at Boise State Tri

The Southern Utah University gymnastics team took second place out of three teams on Friday, Feb. 16. Boise State University took first with a score of 196.650, the Flippin’ Birds finished at 196.250 and Sacramento State University scored 195.225.

Vault
The Broncos led the way on the vault, tallying a score of 49.200, followed by SUU at 49.125 and Sacramento State at 48.800.

For Boise State, Emily Lopez poured in a team-high 9.900. Trailing her was Courtney Blackson at 9.875 and Adriana Popp with a score of 9.850. 

The Flippin’ Birds got a meet high score on the vault from sophomore Kayla Pardue at 9.950. Ellie Cacciola also added a 9.825.

The Hornets struggled on the vault, a 9.825 from Sara Lutrel being their highest score. At 9.800 was Emma Morgenthaler, who finished second on the team. 

Bars
Southern Utah had the highest team score on the bars, scoring a 49.175. Boise State was second at 49.075, followed by Sacramento State at 48.675. 

Freshman Brinlee Christensen had a score of 9.875 to lead the Flippin’ Birds. They received scores of 9.850 from Trista Goodman and freshman Niya Randolph as well. 

Boise State got a team high score from Lopez with a 9.950. Behind her with a 9.800 was freshman Mahleea Werline.

Sacramento State continued to struggle with only two athletes, Rose Wilson and Jillianne Lastra, scoring a 9.800. The rest of the team was under that mark. 

Beam
The three teams all scored closely on the beam with Boise State at 48.975, Southern Utah at 48.825 and Sacramento State at 48.700. BSU’s Popp tallied a meet high score of 9.950, followed by a 9.925 from teammate Emma Loyim

The Flippin’ Birds’ biggest performance in the event came from Cacciola at 9.825, followed by a 9.775 from freshman Alyssa Fernandez

For the Hornets, Lutrel had a team high score of 9.825.  Kara Houghton finished behind her at 9.775. 

Floor
The Broncos separated from the group on the floor routine, scoring an impressive 49.400. The Flippin’ Birds finished second at 49.125, and the Hornets totaled a 49.050. 

For Boise State, Blackson put up a team-high 9.950. Elaina McGovern added a 9.875, and Loyim scored a 9.850. 

SUU’s Taylor Gull tallied a 9.875. Fernandez, Pardue and Randolph added a 9.825 score each. 

For the Hornets, Morgenthaler had a team high score of 9.850 and Lutrel put up a 9.825. 

Randolph won the all-around, scoring a 39.225. Lutrel finished second at 39.175, followed by her teammate Morgenthaler at 38.975. 

What’s next?
The Flippin’ Birds will host No. 24-ranked Iowa State University on Friday, Feb. 29, at 7 p.m. The meet can be streamed through Overnght.
