On Feb. 14 from 8:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m., the Southern Utah University Department of Theatre, Dance, and Arts Administration will host ‘The Prom’ Prom in the Gilbert Great Hall of the Hunter Alumni Center.
The event was inspired by SUU’s running musical “The Prom,” which tells the story of a teenage girl in Indiana who wants to take her girlfriend to prom just like any other kid. Through the help of a group of Broadway actors and a supportive principal, she comes to love and accept who she is and inspires those around her to do the same, which leads to their decision to host a prom for everyone to enjoy.
“It’s about building a prom for everybody, and we wanted to be able to do that for the whole SUU student body,” said co-organizer Rebecca Villalobos. “It is not just a TDAA event. It is a TDAA-backed event, but it is for everybody on campus.”
The event will include performances from local bands and artists, including: Black Cat Parade, Flower House, Caesar, and Jimmy Carter’s Peanut Farm. It will also include a photo booth for students to capture the memories they make.
“It’s going to be wicked. I’m excited about the bands we have performing,” said co-organizer Kennedy Bird.
‘The Prom’ Prom also includes voting for prom royalty, where two seniors and two juniors who were voted in by the student body will be determined as prom royalty for their respective classes. The results of the voting will be announced during the event.
With the amount of students who haven’t had the opportunity to attend prom since the epidemic in 2020, this is not only a good way to raise money but also to inspire the community.
“It is a fundraiser first and foremost, but it’s also a little prom because so many people from 2020 did not get one,” said Villalobos. You can purchase tickets online for $10, and the money raised from the night’s activities will be put toward future TDAA-backed events like this.
