SUU shines at the Don Kirby and Husky Classic to close regular season

The Southern Utah University track and field team closed out the 2024 indoor season at the Don Kirby Invitational and Husky Classic on Friday, Feb. 9, and Saturday, Feb. 10. This competitive weekend was filled with personal records and top 10 placements.

Don Kirby Invitational
Dylan Gibson had an incredible 200-meter run. With a time of 21.07 seconds, he placed second in the event and broke the previous SUU record. Other notable competitors in the 200 were Nelson Douglas and Jaedyn Carpenter, who completed the race in 21.33 and 21.42 seconds to put them in fourth and fifth place all-time in SUU history.

Gibson and Carpenter continued to put on an incredible performance in the 400. Gibson broke another school record with a 46.28-second performance. This run also earned him first place in the event. Right behind him was Carpenter, who finished in second with a time of 46.73 seconds. 

The Thunderbirds also set a new school record in the 4×400 relay with Gibson, Carpenter, Douglas and Noah Bringhurst. They ran for a time of 3:08.36 seconds,  cutting an impressive four seconds off the previous record.

For the women’s team, Makenna Skoczylas placed second all-time in SUU history in the pole vault with a 12-6 3/4 jump.

Shante Myrie had a great 200 with a time of 24.64 seconds, placing her third all-time in the Thunderbird record books.

Savannah Nielson ran a 8.58-second time in the 60-meter hurdles, putting her second all-time in Don Kirby Invitational history.

Husky Classic
In the 3,000, the women’s team was led by Madison DeBos and Jordyn Bartolmucci, who finished with times of 9:30.36 and 9:34.14. This placed them fourth and sixth in SUU history, respectively. 

Josii Johnson did great in the 800, finishing with a 2:09.67 and putting her fourth all-time in the school record books.

For the men’s team, Isaiah Labra took second place in the mile with a time of 3:58.50, setting a new personal record and putting him fourth all-time at SUU. 

Hayden Harward set a personal record in the 3,000 with a time of 8:09.71.

Next for SUU
The Thunderbirds will go to New Mexico, where they will compete in the Western Athletic Conference Championships on Monday, Feb. 19, and Tuesday, Feb. 20.
