Housing Wellness Group gathers campus for Friendsgiving

Thanksgiving was celebrated early by Southern Utah University’s Housing Wellness Interest Group with  their Wellness Friendsgiving event on Sunday. Students gathered in the Getaway Room of Eccles A, one of the university’s dormitories, to share a moment of camaraderie.

The event featured a variety of activities to suit everyone. There were coloring books, an airfield hockey table with shuffleboard and on request, a special Thanksgiving episode of Peanuts was played on the room’s TV.

Sarah Starley, a freshman at SUU, was one of many students attending this event.

“The event was very chill. It was nice to get out of my apartment,” said Starley. “I think Friendsgiving is a cute idea. It’s nice, especially for college students, as a way to celebrate.”

Along with the activities, students were also offered food. Popcorn, candy, hot cocoa and apple cider were available. With a beverage in hand, participants got to know each other in lively conversations.

AJ Jolly, a student in business management, and Laura Gould, studying environmental science at SUU, shared their experiences at the gathering.

“I liked the event,” said Jolly. “I think it’s cool to have reasons to come together as friends and groups to hang out.”

Gould added, “It was a fun way to meet new people.”

SUU University housing has four interest groups that contribute to its residents’ college life. Outdoor Adventures, Wellness, Leadership Development and Creativity & Innovation groups organize events like this once a month. They encourage students to break their routine, take time for themselves and get to know each other.

“The event was part of the Wellness Interest Group. It was like a get-together, relax and enjoy some time activity,” said Quest Schwab, resident assistant for University Housing “A lot of people showed up, so it was really nice.”

On Thursday, Nov. 21, University Housing will be hosting its final activity of the semester. Students will be able to enjoy karaoke and Just Dance in Eccles A, as well as ping pong and video games on the fourth floor of the Founders dorms.
