Cartoons and Cereal: a night to de-stress and unwind

Because this part of the semester can be stressful, Southern Utah University’s Student Outreach and Support Center organized the #EmbraceTheChill event on Wednesday, giving students a break from their studies.

This was a nostalgic evening with the purpose of self-care and connecting with the community. Watching a classic Scooby Doo cartoon and eating cold cereal can instantly bring back childhood memories most can relate to. With the semester nearly complete, organizers searched for how they could give students a much-needed environment to decompress.

“We wanted #EmbraceTheChill to be something laid back for students, away from all the craziness,” said Janae Hawk, a coordinator for the event. “With midterms hitting hard and the air outside becoming more frigid, we figured a classic night of cartoons and cereal could provide some comfort and entertainment. It’s about providing students with a place to relax, even if it is just for one night.”

The cartoon and snack selection was designed to evoke nostalgia and familiarity for the students, allowing them to unwind with safe experiences.

The event was attended by approximately 70 students and a handful of supportive staff members. Attendees reported positively to the organizers, and students shared that they appreciated taking a break and being re-energized.

More events with a wellness objective will be available in the future, including SUU’s Friendsgiving on Nov. 22, with food, games, and a community for students this holiday season. Everyone is welcome to these events to promote community and talk about student mental well-being.
