The Financial Wellness Center hosted the first of six financial events in February, each aimed at helping students manage their finances and preparing them for the future. The event, which took place on Feb. 7, was titled Credit Card Management.
The meeting was discussion-style with plenty of students in attendance, and the environment encouraged students to feel comfortable discussing money.
A local Cedar City business owner, Shelly Dansie, started the meeting by asking attendees to identify their spending habits and buyer behavior. She told attendees about her childhood and how she grew up in a family who needed to save as much as possible. Then, she encouraged the group to discuss their childhood finances and identify money habits.
Most students already had credit cards, so the remainder of the meeting focused on payments, credit scores and ways to pay off credit cards.
“The better the score, the easier your life,” said Dansie.
Dansie owns Decorworx and Rainbow Sign & Design here in Cedar City. She broke down how she runs her businesses and funds and why they work for her, emphasizing that there are many correct ways to budget and save. However, Dansie recommended that what works financially for businesses can also work for personal finances and vice versa.
Dansie has been to 80 different countries and has never paid for any of the trips because she takes advantage of all the rewards that credit cards offer.
Love and Money on Feb. 14, Thor’s Hammer of Knowledge on Feb. 20 and Being an Entrepreneur on Feb 22 are the final events offered to students. Each will have free food provided, and will last an hour.
