Man airlifted after ATV crash in southern Utah

A 74-year-old man was airlifted to the hospital after losing control of his all-terrain vehicle on a winding gravel road in Iron County on Sept. 18. The man was about two miles from State Route 20.

The man sustained severe injuries, including a head‑back laceration and multiple broken bones. When responders arrived, they found the man conscious and breathing.

“During the investigation, it was determined that the male had been operating an ATV on a winding/curved gravel road when he lost control, resulting in a crash,” the official news release from the Iron County Sheriff’s Sgt. Tom Byrd said. “Even experienced riders face real hazards on these rural roads.”

Medical personnel stabilized the man on‑site. He was then flown to St. George Regional Hospital for further treatment.

“The investigation has been completed and the subject is recovering in the hospital at this time,” the release states.

“Wear a well‑fitted helmet and protective gear every ATV ride,” Byrd said. “Basic safety equipment greatly cuts serious‑injury risks.”
