Southern Utah University’s Michael O. Leavitt Center is hosting its fourth charity thrift store on Friday, April 17, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Students and community members will have the chance to shop secondhand items while supporting individuals with developmental disabilities. Donations can be dropped off inside the Leavitt Center through April 16.
Shoppers can expect a mix of clothing, books and other secondhand items, with most priced under $10 to keep them affordable for students. Only card payments will be accepted, and all sales will go directly to Turn Community Services, a nonprofit that provides residential, employment and community-based programs for those with developmental disabilities across Utah.
According to Leavitt Center Student Director Kelty Littrell, the goal is to make the event both accessible and impactful.
“It’s affordable, but it’s also going toward a good cause,” Littrell said. “The Leavitt Center doesn’t profit off any sales. It’s going to an organization that helps people try and live their best lives.”
The Leavitt Center has partnered with different local organizations for past thrift store fundraisers, including Canyon Creek Services. Littrell said the event typically sees a strong turnout from both students and community members.
“We get quite a lot of people,” she said. “Students who like thrifting or shopping come out, and even community members donate and shop as well.”
Any unsold items will be donated to local thrift organizations, including Deseret Industries, so they can continue to be used within the community.
