Founder’s Week at Southern Utah University is set to commence on March 23 and continue until March 28. The week-long celebration has become a staple of the university, and consists of events, activities and traditions created to honor SUU’s history and legacy. It is being put on by the Student Alumni Association.
“Founder’s Week is the week that SUU was established,” said SAA Legacy Vice Chair Cooper Acor. “I would say that Homecoming Week is our big fall semester week, and then Founder’s Week is the big week in the spring.”
Because of its importance, Founder’s Week is filled with events for students to attend and celebrate the school. The activities will kick off on Monday, March 23 with, “Thor’s Present Pursuit.” For this event, presents themed around SUU traditions will be hidden around campus for students to find. Other activities on this day will include “Founders Floats with President Benson” and “C You on the Trail.”
“I like Founders Floats,” said Acor. “Root beer floats, it’s nice outside and having Mindy Benson around meeting the students. It’s always fun to see her interacting with the students and giving them the opportunity to meet her if they haven’t before.”
Tuesday, March 24, will consist of a special lecture by guest speaker Dr. Brenden W. Rensink, while on Wednesday, March 25, SUU’s famous “Lunch on the Main” tradition will take place. Beginning at 11:30 a.m., lunch will be provided to students at various sites around campus. Participants will have the opportunity to eat free food and learn about the founding of their campus.
The next event of Founder’s Week will be “High 5’s and Fries” on Thursday, March 26, from noon to 2 p.m. This event will provide students with an opportunity to high-5 the statue of Sharwan Smith and get free Chick-Fil-A fries. It will take place in the Sharwan Smith Student Center. Later that day is “Fitness with the Founders,” which will take place in the PE Building at 7 p.m.
On Friday, March 27, students will be treated to a special screening of “Back Up the Mountain,” a special film detailing the founding of SUU.
Saturday, March 28, will mark the end of Founder’s Week with an SUU Day of Service. Students, faculty and residents of the community can participate in service opportunities throughout Cedar City.
The final event of the week will be Casino Night, a favorite where students can show off their poker skills. It will take place in the student center from 8 p.m. to midnight.
