Hamletmachine: A Black Box production

Southern Utah University’s College of Performing and Visual Arts is hosting a student production of Hamletmachine, a postdramatic, loose retelling of Shakespeare’s Hamlet. The production runs March 20-21, from 7:30 to 9 p.m. at the Black Box Theatre in the SUU Auditorium.

Hamletmachine was originally written by German playwright Heiner Müller in 1977, exploring political themes, history, and a postwar society. It includes the traditional Hamlet characters, such as Hamlet and Ophelia, but the traditional narrative plot is replaced by imagery and symbolism, with interpretation left to the audience.

The Black Box Grant allows students to produce their dream show with department funding. The grant allows many students to direct a production of their choice while remaining an SUU student. Black Box productions are also a non-traditional, unique type of theatre that provides students with a wider range of experiences.

Tickets are $5 at the door and the production is open to everyone. Viewer discretion is advised due to strong language and staged violence. The event is a part of SUU’s Tradition Keeper and is a student-run production.
