The BopCats: SUU’s newest jazz combo

The BopCats are Southern Utah University’s newest jazz combo. They perform every Thursday at noon in the Sharwan Smith Student Center Living Room to provide live jazz tunes to all who pass by.

The musicians met in SUU’s Jazz One Ensemble and decided to form a combo to showcase their talents and passion. The Living Room space was open from noon to 1 p.m., and the group jumped at the opportunity to perform.

“The music we’re playing, jazz music, is different every time you listen to it,” said trumpeter Kyle Ohm. “It’s impossible to play it the same way twice.”

Jazz is an improvisatory music form that allows musicians to implement their own style and take on a piece. The BopCats focus on this aspect of their craft and are constantly working to improve.

Each year, the group will be reauditioned to keep the band alive while members graduate and move on from SUU.

Find the BopCats each Thursday and listen to the sweet tunes of jazz classics and modern melodies. For more information on upcoming performances, follow them on Instagram.
