Students gathered Among Friends with SUU International Affairs

Between rivalries and camaraderie, the Southern Utah University Office of International Affairs gathered students for a game session on Thursday, Feb. 5, from 11 a.m. to noon. Participants met in the Sharwan Smith Student Center Living Room to participate in various activities and laughter was abundant.

Upon arrival, students were greeted with food, including soup, bread, cookies and more. With their lunch in hand, they then dove into the different activities offered. The event featured coloring pages, love notes, bracelet making, origami and board games.

“I think the event was very fun and offered many different activities that encouraged other students to engage with one another,” said Valerie Frias, an attendee at the event. “I was able to talk to other people instead of people that I already knew. My favorite moment was playing Jenga with my friend because it was her first time.”

Along with these activities, participants played bingo. Each got into it and tried their best to win the chocolate bars that were up for grabs.

“We just wanted to show a sense of community with everything that’s happening in our country right now,” said International Student Ambassador and Showcase Team Member Priscilla Gyllenskog. “We thought it was probably a good idea to just have a fun little event where everyone can come together, just play games and eat some food.”

SUU International Affairs hosts events like this throughout the year. Located in the Student Center, the organization has become the place for both international and domestic students to open themselves up to different worlds and diverse cultures while making new friends.

“Just come. I’m not international. I’m from Utah. Half of our international student ambassadors are from the U.S. and half of are from all over the world,” added Gyllenskog.
“Everyone’s so friendly. It gives you a sense of community and you can meet people from all over.”

On Feb. 24, the organization will celebrate the Lunar New Year from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Student Center Ballroom. This event also serves as a tradition, so don’t miss it!
