On Friday, Jan. 9, the Southern Utah University Student Programming Board offered students a cozy escape with a “Friends”-inspired night held in the Sharwan Smith Student Center Living Room.
Upon arrival, attendees were transported into the universe of the TV show with purple table cloth and stickers, reminiscent of the iconic purple door in the apartment of the six roommates. Along with that, the event featured sweet snacks, hot chocolate, friendship bracelets and a poster-making station.
“The event was really fun and I truly enjoyed making bracelets with my friends,” said attendee Bella Isimbi.
While participating in craft activities, students also took part in a speedfriending. Questions regarding hobbies, traveling plans, majors and more were asked to get to know each other.
“I really enjoyed the event! I felt it was a great idea and seemed to work pretty well as I met new friends and not just their name, but also some fun things about them,” said SUU student Amy Lee. “My favorite part was when a heated group conversation started up about Dr. Pepper and then another equally interesting one about “Stranger Things” right after that. We definitely broke the ice right off the bat.”
A trivia quiz about “Friends” was held alongside these discussions, giving students the chance to win prizes. Participants got into the spirit, working together with new acquaintances to answer the questions.
“When we were thinking about ideas that would be good icebreakers, we immediately thought of Alexis Garcia’s speedfriending she made a few years back,” said SPB director Emily Dean. “We wanted it to be a casual environment where people could meet, or rekindle old friendships that they had before.”
Towards the end, the event turned into a watch party and students watched episodes of the show before leaving together for the gymnastics meet that same night.
“We had a fantastic turnout. There were a lot of people that ended up leaving at the same time as new people they met. So that was ultimately our goal, and I think it went pretty well,” added Dean.
This SPB’s event was one of many opportunities for students to meet new people and maybe even form lasting friendships that would last throughout their college years.
