Salt Lake man shot and killed by police after throwing rocks at officers

After receiving an assault call on Oct. 29, police officers arrived at the scene to find Jose Hernandez and offered him medical attention. The officers asked if he was involved in the assault, but Hernandez didn’t answer any of their questions.

Hernandez took some large rocks and put them in his sweatshirt pocket. The officers asked him to put the rocks back, but Hernandez got up and walked away.

“Hernandez took one of the rocks out of his sweatshirt and held it in his right hand,” according to the Salt Lake City Police Department. “He refused to drop the rock despite commands from officers.”

Hernandez began to run, and once he reached the corner, he threw a rock at the closest officer, who fired a shot simultaneously, hitting Hernandez.

The officers detained Hernandez and requested medical attention. Hernandez died on the way to the hospital. The officer had minor injuries and was treated at a local hospital.
