Commercial music students take the stage for fall showcase

The Southern Utah University Commercial Music program hosted its annual Fall Showcase at The Thorley Recital Hall at the Music Center on Saturday, Nov. 8, 2025.

The free, open-to-the-public event featured four ensemble bands: Alternate Currents, Direct Currents, Commercial Breaks and the Brazilian Band. Each group presented distinct music styles, including a variety of covers and original songs.

“This was a fun event to see local bands play, and it’s nice to see just how many talented people are here in Cedar City,” said attendee Maya Sorenson.

Under the direction of Dr. McKay Tebbs, the event showcases students’ growth in performance and creativity.

“This showcase is totally different from all other things that the music department does,” said Kennie Lewis, a member of Direct Currents.

Beyond performances, the program equips students with real-world skills in music technology, audio recording and songwriting. This prepares graduates for careers in the evolving music industry.

“Any live performance is good exposure for any artist, and having it through the school helps too, because they promote everywhere and we get a good amount of people through families, friends and students,” said Dakota Allison from Direct Currents.

The fall showcase serves a dual purpose, offering the community a fresh,  dynamic concert as well as providing students a platform to demonstrate their artistry and professional growth. Events like this and Thunder 91’s Battle of the Bands show SUU’s continued efforts to support local artists.

Community members and music enthusiasts are encouraged to attend SUU’s ever-growing live music events to support the Commercial Music program and all of Cedar City’s local artists.
