As spring registration opens, head editors of the Kolob Canyon Review (KCR) encourage students to join their editorial staff by enrolling in ENGL 4790, Literary Journal Editing.
KCR is the literary magazine for Southern Utah University, and has won international awards. The journal accepts a large variety of art and written pieces and encourages involvement from any major.
“Joining KCR is one of the best ways to make a difference in SUU’s literary community, to get your finger on the pulse of what people are writing, and to participate in a project that is larger than yourself,” said Ollie Stirland, assistant head editor. “Plus, it’s a great way to get marketable job skills and meet great people.”
Despite being overseen by Professor Nathaniel Taggart, KCR is entirely student-led both as a class and a journal. This makes it possible for students to work in publishing and editing without the need for years of experience in the field.
ENGL 4790 is held Wednesdays from 4 p.m. to 5:40 p.m. during both fall and spring semesters. The fall semester focuses on gaining submissions and choosing which pieces will be included in the final publication. The spring semester teaches the basics of editing for a literary journal as students prepare for the publication party at the end of the school year.
The CRN for the Literary Journal Editing class in spring 2026 is 12180, and is offered as either a one or two credit class.
