SUMA features senior BFA projects with “Sublime” exhibition

Southern Utah University’s Department of Filmmaking, Art and Design has come together again to commemorate senior student’s capstone projects in their 2025 Senior Bachelor of Fine Arts Exhibition. This year’s exhibit, “Sublime”, opened on Saturday, March 29 and will run until April 25.

On April 1 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. an opening reception was held to celebrate the graduating class. Students, faculty and community members were invited to support the newest group of professional artists.

This year’s event surpassed expectations for the amount of guests by having nearly 500 attendees. While family and friends walked around the museum, student artists stayed near their displays in order to answer questions.

The displays ranged in work, including photography, sculptures, graphic designs and, for the first time, movie trailers by the filmmaking students.

Sarah “Graveey” Hutchings, a film student, had their thesis film “The Bird and The Bear” showcased at the exhibit.

“It’s really great to be here, it’s really awesome to see the featured cohorts and how excited they are about filmmaking,” said Hutchings.

Students benefit from opportunities to share their work to the public as well as develop skills relevant to the professional art world. Students learn how to cooperate with fellow artists, organize materials and keep up with deadlines.

This reception is part of the department’s goal to train students in studio areas, understanding art’s past and present and build a foundation for individual expression.

Ceramics student Reina Kropf had her piece “Here Are Two of Me” on display. Her piece is about personal change and how different locations, people and experiences teach us who we want to be.

“I want to be a museum artist, I want to be in galleries,” said Kropf. “So this has been the perfect opportunity for me and other artists to put their work into the world.”

Hutchings and Kropf’s work as well as others can be viewed for free Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
