The Southern Utah University Illustration Club, Graphic Design Club and Ceramics Guild joined forces to run the Spring Art Market on Friday, March 28. Student artists sold their creations in order to help fundraise for future club activities. The art market ran from noon to 3 p.m. in the Sharwan Smith Student Center Ballroom and had a variety of artwork to explore.
SUU students visiting the art market could browse from 15 different booths, all supplied by student artists. The market had a large mix of art styles and mediums due to the collaboration between these three clubs.
“The fact that I get to own it now and go home and put it on my wall makes me so happy,” said student Adyson Dragon while showing off a new piece of art she had purchased from a classmate.
Beyond providing an opportunity to buy one of a kind pieces of art, this market allowed student artists to showcase their creativity while learning how to market and sell their art. Some students had spent weeks preparing for this event.
“So last year, the previous club president of the illustration club, she ran the art market and I wanted to do the same”, said Autumn Lewis, president of the illustration club and one of the dozens of artists selling their wares.
Although there has been an art market every spring for the last few years, this year was the largest due to the involvement of the illustration, graphic design, and ceramics clubs.
Students who want to pursue art like Dragon and Lewis can join any of the art clubs or major in several different degrees including Art, Graphic Design, Ceramics, Illustration, Painting and Photography. Each of these degrees involves learning about and demonstrating different art practices.
