SUU Outdoors to host “Spring Cling” bouldering competition

Southern Utah University Outdoors plans to host an exciting bouldering competition for all climbing enthusiasts on Saturday, Mar. 29 at the SUU P.E. Building’s indoor climbing wall.

The event will have different brackets and judges for beginner, intermediate, and advanced-level climbers. It will also include lunch and prizes for all participants.

“We just want to emphasize that this event is for all levels of climbers from beginners to advanced,” said SUU Outdoors Coordinator Nicole Gramstad.

The climbing wall is currently closed for the entire week leading up to the event. At the same time, SUU Outdoors staff members reset all its routes to ensure that competitors on Saturday will have never seen or practiced any of the bouldering routes before.

Many locally big-name sponsors such as Cedar Sports, Bristlecone Yoga, and Beans and Brews have signed on to support the event, making it possible for SUU Outdoors to offer a large variety of prizes. Climbers can win prizes in the competition or by entering a raffle, and SUU Outdoors plans for everyone who comes to be able to leave the event with a prize. All registered climbers will also enjoy a free lunch at the event, courtesy of SUU Outdoors and its sponsors.

“We host events like this to bring the community together, to get people to meet new people and get to know other people who like to climb,” said Megan Timmons, an SUU Outdoors staff member and trip leader. “That’s one of the main goals of SUU Outdoors is just bringing people together through the outdoors.”

The competition has 40 spots available for climbers to sign up. The entrance fee, which includes lunch and prizes, is $20 for students and $25 for non-students.

SUU Outdoors hosts a wide variety of outdoor-oriented events for students. Students can sign up to participate in longer weekend backpacking or rafting expeditions, while local events require no sign-ups and include various daily free activities, including yoga, slacklining, wallyball, and more.
