Flippin’ Birds take flight in MPSF Championship

Aiming for their third-straight conference championship, the Southern Utah University women’s gymnastics team competed in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation on Saturday, Mar. 22. 

SUU rallied, taking first over the University of California, Davis, University of Alaska, Anchorage, and Sacramento State University. The Flippin’ Birds finished with a team score of 196.625.

Vault
Southern Utah started strong on the vault with a 49.000, tying with UC Davis. Freshman Mia Hampton and Senior Ellie Cacciola led the way for SUU, each landing a 9.850.

The Aggies’ Megan Ray led all gymnasts with a 9.900. 

Bars
The Flippin’ Birds continued their strong performance with a 49.225 on the uneven bars. Brinlee Christensen, Niya Randolph, and Isabella Neff all scored 9.875. 

Despite SUU’s strong showing, Amelia Moneymaker led the meet with a 9.900 for UC Davis. Alaska’s Jada Niles finished tied for No. 5 with a 9.800.

Beam
The Aggies took control on the beam, finishing first on the rotation with a 49.100. Moneymaker led the way with her second 9.900. 

Southern Utah finished second, landing a 49.075. Maria Ferguson led the Flippin’ Birds with a 9.875. 

Floor
With just one rotation left in the MPSF Championship, Southern Utah dominated with a 49.325. Randolph and Christensen led all gymnasts with a 9.925. 

Moneymaker and Keanna Abraham finished tied for third with a 9.900 each. Sacramento States’ Sarah Lutrel led the Hornets with a 9.825. 

Southern Utah finished first with a 196.625, followed by UC Davis with a 196.400. Sacramento State finished third, scoring 193.850, with Alaska finishing last, with a team score of 191.875. 

Moneymaker finished first in the all-around with a 39.500. 

What’s next?
Southern Utah will compete in the National Collegiate Athletics Association Division One regionals starting Wednesday, April 2.
