Thunderbirds make statement in opening weekend of WAC play

The Southern Utah University softball team kicked off Western Athletic Conference play with a display of grit, power, and late-game heroics in a thrilling three-game series against Tarleton State University.

The Thunderbirds opened conference action with a dramatic extra-inning walk-off victory and followed up with an explosive offensive performance in game two. Though they narrowly dropped the series finale, SUU proved they are ready to battle in WAC competition, setting the tone for the season ahead.

Following the series, SUU holds a 7-15 overall record and a 2-1 start in WAC play.

Game one 2-1 for SUU
The series opener in St. George, Utah, was a close battle that extended into extra innings. Tarleton State scored first with a run in the third inning. SUU responded in the fourth inning bringing the game to a 1-1 tie.

The game remained tied until the bottom of the ninth, when SUU’s offense capitalized on a defensive mistake by Tarleton State, leading to the walk-off victory.

Game two, 8-5 for SUU
In the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader at Kathryn Berg Field in Cedar City, the Thunderbirds showcased their offensive power. SUU jumped to an early lead, scoring three runs in the first inning.

Tarleton State narrowed the gap with two runs in the third, but SUU responded with a four-run fifth inning, highlighted by a two-run double by Kassidy Munoz. Despite a late rally by Tarleton State, SUU’s defense held firm, securing the win.

Game three, 6-5 for Tarleton State
The series finale was a nail-biter. Tarleton State took an early lead, but SUU battled back, tying the game at 5-5 in the sixth inning with a solo home run off the bat of Ariyana Miranda. However, Tarleton State managed to push across the go-ahead run in the top of the seventh. SUU threatened in the bottom half but couldn’t capitalize, resulting in a 6-5 loss.

Looking ahead
The Thunderbirds will now shift their focus to their first conference road series, traveling to Abilene, Texas, to face Abilene Christian University, starting with a doubleheader on March 14 at 1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m., followed by the series finale on March 15 at 10 a.m. You  can stream all three games live on ESPN+.
