Thunderbirds fall short to Utah Valley in 70-68 defeat

Following a thrilling 76-74 victory over Utah Tech University on Feb. 13, the Southern Utah University men’s basketball team hosted Utah Valley University on Saturday, Feb. 15, in the America First Event Center. 

The Thunderbirds put up a strong fight to protect their home court, but in a nail-biting finish, Utah Valley secured a close 70-68 win.

With the loss, Southern Utah drops to 11-15 on the season and 3-9 in the Western Athletic Conference. 

First half
Utah Valley started strong, taking an early lead with key shots in the opening minutes. 

Southern Utah quickly responded, remaining aggressive and exchanging baskets with their opponents. Dominique Ford was instrumental, helping SUU take the lead with two crucial three-pointers.

Both teams kept the score close throughout the first half, and by the end of the period, the Thunderbirds held a narrow 33-32 lead. 

Second half
Southern Utah scored first in the second quarter, but Utah Valley quickly reclaimed the lead and began to assert control. Duncan Reid hit a vital three-pointer, tying the game at 48-48.

Both teams continued to score back and forth, with fouls starting to pile up. SUU faced some significant foul trouble, but Utah Valley managed to maintain its advantage as the half  ended. 

Utah Valley held a nine-point lead with 1:44 left in the game. Southern Utah kept fighting, keeping it close but would go on to lose 70-68.

— Utah Valley shot just 58.8% from the free-throw line
— Ford led all scorers with 28 points
— Utah Valley with the win, improves to 10-1 in the WAC

Southern Utah will travel to Abilene, Texas, for an exciting matchup against Abilene Christian University on Thursday, Feb. 20, at 6 p.m. This game can be streamed on ESPN+.
