While every Friday at Southern Utah University is #SUURedFriday, this Friday, Feb. 7, is a special day to embrace the color, as it will be National Wear Red Day. Across the United States, the color red will be displayed, offering students an additional occasion to showcase their T-Bird pride.
To celebrate this day, students are encouraged to dress in their brightest red attire. For inspiration, they can find a “Red Friday fit check” on the @suutraditions Instagram account. Members of the Student Alumni Association will be armed with their tradition keeper boards throughout campus, ready to take pictures, to immortalize the outfit.
“Friday is always special because we try to get as many students to wear red and get involved,” said SAA’s Marketing and Involvement Chair Mia Vazquez. “It’s always great to show off our school spirit and our T-Bird spirit.”
Symbolizing pride and unity, wearing red on Fridays is one of SUU’s traditions, and has been for many years. Over the generations, SUU’s colors have been seen everywhere. Whether in the streets or thrift shops, the color red marks and transcends the passage of time.
“The color red inspires me to show my school pride and how much the school has impacted me through the community, staff, faculty and friends. It pulls it all together,” said Vazquez. “I think it shows the history, involvement and connections that you can create just from wearing one color.”
Every Friday, the Student Involvement and Leadership Office, located in the Sharwan Smith Student Center offers the community the opportunity to enter a raffle and win several prizes.
“You just go to the office, check in and then you’re entered into a drawing,” added Vazquez. “They give big things away like PS5, Nintendo switches, bread wallets, all that stuff. It’s super fun.”
With a campus rich in history and tradition, this upcoming Friday is an occasion for SUU faculty, staff and students to proudly display their school color and complete a tradition.
