Christensen wins all-around as Flippin’ Birds excel in BYU Tri-Meet

Capping off their five-match road trip to start the 2025 campaign, the Southern Utah University women’s gymnastics team competed in the Brigham Young University Tri-Meet on Friday, Jan. 31. against Brigham Young and the University of California, Davis. 

Southern Utah performed well, scoring 195.825 and finishing first overall. BYU finished second with 195.600, followed by UC Davis scoring 194.100.

Vault
The Cougars started strong on the vault, landing a 48.925. BYU’s Kylie Eaquinto led all gymnasts with a 9.825 on the rotation. SUU’s Niya Randolph scored a team-high 9.800, tied with Aggie gymnast Megan Ray.

Uneven bars
Both Southern Utah and Brigham Young landed great team scores on the uneven bars, both putting up 49.050. Eaquinto once again led all gymnasts with a 9.875, followed by Randolph with a 9.850. 

BYU’s Anna Bramblett-Wilde and SUU’s Mia Hampton tied for third with 9.825. UC Davis struggled, scoring just 48.275, falling behind in the overall score.

Beam
Southern Utah turned to Ellie Cacciola to continue her strong start to the season. The senior from Owasso, Oklahoma scored a rotation-high 9.875 and helped SUU score a 48.700. 

Floor
Southern Utah dominated the floor routine, scoring a meet-high 49.250.  Senior Taylor Gull and Hampton both showcased a 9.900. UC Davis’ Amelia Moneymaker led the Aggies with a 9.900. 

Despite BYU’s 49.225 on the floor, SUU snuck away with the win with a total of 195.825.

SUU’s Brinlee Christensen finished first in the all-around with a 38.950, followed by Eaquinto with a 38.725 and Randolph with a 38.550.

What’s next?
Southern Utah will host Sacramento State University for their home-opener on Friday, Feb. 7, at 6:30 p.m. This meet will be held in the America First Event Center.
