Flippin’ Birds ready for BYU Tri-Meet

After a week break for the Southern Utah University women’s gymnastics team, the Flippin’ Birds will compete in the Brigham Young University Tri-Meet on Friday, Jan. 31, at 7 p.m. SUU will compete against BYU and the University of California, Davis. 

Southern Utah
In Southern Utah’s last competition, the Flippin’ Birds scored a season-high 196.175, finishing second in the Best of Utah meet. SUU ranks No. 28 in the nation with an average score of 195.169. 

All-around gymnast Niya Randolph was recently named Gymnast of the Week in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation after her efforts in the Best of Utah. Randolph has impressed in her sophomore year, recording first place in the all-around against Utah State University on Jan. 10. 

Freshman Mia Hampton has also been electric for SUU. Hampton scored first in the all-around the last time SUU faced BYU on Jan.17. Also, Hampton scored a season-high 9.900 in the floor routine at the Best of Utah. 

Brigham Young
The Cougars are off to a slow start to the 2025 campaign. After starting the season ranked No. 22 in the nation, BYU has fallen to No. 41, with an average of 194.655. 

Brigham Young has struggled in their last two meetings against Southern Utah, losing 194.750-193.375 in their first meeting on Jan. 17, followed by their loss to SUU at the Best of Utah, scoring a meet-low 195.750. 

Despite the early struggles, BYU’s Kylie Eaquinto has been a bright spot for the Cougars. Eaquinto, an all-around gymnast from Orem, Utah, finished third in the all-around against SUU. 

UC Davis
Like the Cougars, UC Davis has struggled to start the season. The Aggies rank No. 52 in the nation after starting the season ranked No. 29. Their season-high score came on Jan. 19, where they finished second in the meet, scoring a 194.375.

Senior Keanna Abraham and Junior Amelia Moneymaker are the two best gymnasts at UC Davis. Abraham scored a season-high 9.875 on the vault on Jan. 10.

Moneymaker, an all-around gymnast from Sacramento, California, scored her best all-around finish on Jan. 10, where she finished second with a score of 38.975.
