SUU Outdoors, one of Southern Utah University’s programs, is holding sign-ups on Jan. 27 for their Snow Canyon Hiking Trip.
Those who want to attend need to be at base camp in the Sharwan Smith Student Center by noon. It is recommended to show up early to get a spot in line. A student must be present to sign up, and friends can’t do it for them.
For this trip, SUU Outdoors is taking 10 people. They will have a waiting list for interested people who may not have made it on the sign-up sheet. This allows people who are interested to still have a chance to go if someone cannot make it on the trip.
They will host a pre-trip meeting on Feb. 5 at 4 p.m. This meeting will discuss where and when to meet for the hike to go over signing waivers, introductions and any equipment they may need. The store offers rain jackets and headlamps for students to rent for this trip. Otherwise, they suggest wearing layers to keep warm and bringing a minimum of 2 liters of water, sunscreen, sunglasses and food. It will be a day trip, so lunch and other snacks are recommended.
The hike, set for Feb. 8, will start with everyone meeting at the SUU Outdoors garage at 8 a.m. and then drive to Snow Canyon. The itinerary from there will depend on the weather, open trailheads and the group’s speed. The plan is to go on the Scout Cave Trail. They will also do the Johnson Arch Trail and hit the lava caves if there is time. On the way home, they plan to stop at Veyo Pies, a bakery in the area, and then land back at the garage around 3:30 p.m.
“You don’t need to have skills,” said Naomi Campbell, one of the trip leaders. “You don’t have to be an avid hiker to go. It’s really entry-level stuff.”
If interested, head to the SUU Outdoors base camp on Jan. 27 to sign up.
