Flippin’ Birds to compete in Best of Utah

With the Best of Utah meet happening on Monday, Jan. 20, at 6 p.m., the Southern Utah University women’s gymnastics team will face off in a quad-meet against Brigham Young University, University of Utah and Utah State University. 

In last year’s Best of Utah, SUU finished third with a score of 194.000; Utah took first with a score of 197.725.

Southern Utah
The Flippin’ Birds enter into the Best of Utah competition 3-2 on the year and rank No. 31 in the nation. SUU is coming off of wins against BYU and Utah State, in which they averaged 194.875.

Sophomore Niya Randolph continues to dominate from a season ago. Randolph won the all-around against Utah State on Jan. 10 and placed second against BYU. 

Mia Hampton has also performed well in her first year with Southern Utah. The freshman from Meridian, Idaho earned first place in the all-around against Utah State. 

Utah
The Utes have high expectations entering 2025. Although Utah is 2-3 to start the season, the Utes are currently ranked No. 4 in the nation. In their last meet, the Utes outlasted Iowa State University 197.300-194.850.

Senior Grace McCallum has started strong in her first three meets. McCallum finished first in the all-around against Utah State and second against Iowa State. 

Freshman Avery Neff has excelled early in her first year in collegiate athletics. Neff finished third in her first ever meet and tied for fifth against the two best schools in the nation. 

Brigham Young
It has been a slow start to the year for the Cougars as they are just 1-4 overall and rank No. 40 in the nation. BYU’s solo win of the year came against Nebraska University. In last year’s Best of Utah, the Cougars finished second. 

Kylie Eaquinto has been the biggest bright spot for the Cougars. The Junior from Orem, Utah finished second in the all-around against Oregon State University and third against Southern Utah. 

Utah State
The Aggies are 0-2 to start the 2025 campaign and rank No. 42 in the nation with a 194.300 average per meet. In their two losses, Utah State has lost by a combined average of 1.587. 

Freshman Kaylie Medrano continues to perform at a high level for the Aggies. The gymnast from Buckeye, Arizona has been Utah State’s best all-around gymnast this  year with a third place finish and a fourth place finish.
