Flippin’ Birds square up against Cougars

All eyes are on the Southern Utah University women’s gymnastics team as they compete against Brigham Young University on Friday, Jan. 17, at 7 p.m. This will be the third meet of the season for both SUU and BYU.

Fresh off of their first outright win of the season, beating Utah State 195.000 to 194.150, Southern Utah finds themselves ranked No. 31 in the nation with a team average of 194.875.

Niya Randolph continues to tear up the competition, landing in the top spot in the all-around on Saturday with a score of 39.100.  Brinlee Christensen also had a standout performance scoring 38.325 finishing third in the all-around. 

Southern Utah found the most success on the balance beam in their competition against Utah State University. Elliot Bringhurst was a large part of that success, leading the team with a 9.925.

Last season, the Flippin’ Birds went 2-3 against the Cougars, with their best performance coming on Mar. 4, when SUU scored a season-high 197.125.

Brigham Young
Brigham Young has started the season playing some tough competition. All four of Brigham Young’s opponents rank in the top 30 in the nation. BYU will host Southern Utah ranked No. 40 in the nation with a team average of 194.413.

Kylie Eaquinto has been one of the best all-around competitors on the team, in the recent loss to Oregon State, she placed second in the all-around with a score of 39.050. In this match, Eaquinto scored a 9.800 on both the vault and balance beam.

Although the competition has been tough, BYU has shown toughness and battled through tough competition. In their event against Oregon State University, the Cougars best rotation was the floor routine, scoring a 48.650.
