After dropping their second game of the season, the Southern Utah University men’s basketball team hosted California State University, Bakersfield on Saturday, Nov. 23. The Thunderbirds emerged victorious with a 74-64 win, improving SUU to a 7-2 record while CSU falls to 4-4.
First half
The first period of play was a low-scoring defensive battle for both units. SUU got hot early and jumped out to a double-digit lead. SUU’s Jamir Simpson got into foul trouble early, so he was benched for most of the half. This was a major benefit to the Roadrunners, as Simpson is the Thunderbirds lead scorer, averaging 16.7 points per game. CSU went on a run to put themselves back into the game, and the half drew to a close with SUU leading 27-23.
Second half
The second period was the exact opposite of the first, becoming an offensive shootout. Southern Utah built another 10-point lead, with the majority of the offensive production coming from Dominique Ford, who played a season-high 37 minutes. Another run from CSU brought the game back to a one-point game, however, Simpson had a perfect night from the free throw line going 10-10, and SUU was able to close out the game with a 74-64 win.
Simpson led all scorers with 21 points. Jamari Sibley had a unique statistical game, recording four points, six rebounds, an assist, a steal, a block, and a single turnover.
