The 2024 general election and its results

Voting for the 2024 general election closed on Tuesday, Nov. 5. Here’s what Utah residents and Southern Utah University students need to know regarding amendments B and C, Utah State House representatives and Utah’s Campus Cup competition.

The Utah ballot contained four amendments up for debate. Amendments A and D were deemed unconstitutional, leaving proposed amendments B and C to the Utah Constitution on the ballot.  Amendment B proposes to raise the school fund distribution cap from 4% to 5%, while Amendment C seeks to solidify in the Utah Constitution that county sheriffs must be elected officials.

According to the Associated Press, 71.4% of voters voted to pass Amendment B, while 82.7% voted to pass Amendment C.

The Associated Press calls these results for democratic processes, and results are purely data based. They take data from previous elections and use those to provide voters with information as to how an election or legislative procedure is going.

“…the AP will never declare the outcome in a competitive contest before enough votes are counted to make the winner clear,” says Robert Yoon, Associated Press reporter on elections and democracy.

On Oct. 22, SUU hosted a debate between candidates for the Utah State House of Representatives. Representative candidate for District 70, Carl Albrecht and representative candidates for District 71, Rex Shipp and Steve Merrill were given a chance to speak.

The Associated Press called the results on Nov. 5, which showed that Shipp won the District 71 election with 78.3% of the vote, and Albrecht won the District 70 election with 93.5% of the vote.

In preparation for the election, Utah’s Campus Cup competition went underway with many Utah colleges and universities. Points were earned through voter registration, expedition vote events, visiting the county clerk and campus partnerships. Winners earn a trophy, prizes and a visit from the lieutenant governor.
