On Friday, Nov. 15, Southern Utah University’s International Affairs program hosted a service project event as part of International Education Week. Students gathered in the Sharwan Smith Student Center Global Landing room to make blankets for those in need.
A total of 18 blankets were made and donated to Iron County Care and Share Shelter, assisting homeless men, women and children.
Jack Lunderby, international student advisor at SUU, helped organize the event.
“My favorite thing about blanket-tying as an art and craft project is that it’s very error friendly. There’s no real worry because it will just be tied together and looks fine,” said Lunderby. “On top of that, I really like this event because it’s just a chance to bring people together to do some good.”
Plain and patterned fabrics, available in sizes up to two yards, were provided for students to make blankets of their choice. The International Affairs program’s staff gave tips and tricks, encouraging everyone to take part in this project.
Babita Aryal, an international student, came with her friends to the event.
“It’s my first time trying this and I like the fact that the clothes are donated to children or somebody (in need),” said Aryal, “It is easy to do and it helps us to make memories with our friends.”
Students were able to take pictures with their blankets, and pizza was offered as a reward for their commitment. For more information on SUU International Affairs Program, check their website and Instagram.
